Manchester United are considering a late offer for Chelsea star Willian that would see Anthony Martial move in the opposite direction, according to reports on Sunday.

Both players are seeking a fresh challenge with Martial particularly keen to cut ties with Jose Mourinho after two turbulent years working together at Old Trafford.

Chelsea value Willian at £75million, the same fee United would want for Martial, and The Mirror report that a straight swap deal could work out best for all parties.

Willian has already seen a dream move to Barcelona break down over Chelsea’s high valuation. The Spanish club were prepared to go as high as £60m before talks ended and they opted to sign Bordeaux’s Malcom instead.

But a reunion with Mourinho would be just as appealing for the Brazilian, who was one of the few sticking by the Special One as his final season at Chelsea unravelled around him.

The Portuguese has tried and failed to bring Willian to Old Trafford before, but with a young and talented player like Martial offered as bait, Maurizio Sarri may be more open to a deal.

Mourinho has been keen to get rid of Martial following the forward’s decision to leave United’s pre-season tour of the USA to be with his partner the birth of his son, Swan.

While Mourinho claimed he never told Martial not to go, the Frenchman’s decision not to return to the US following the birth has put further strain on their rocky relationship.

Similarly, Willian has irked new Chelsea manager Sarri by returning late from his summer holidays, citing an expired passport as the reason.

With the transfer window set to close on August 9, there remains little time to broker what would be a very complicated deal. Mourinho remains keen, however, to add to his squad, with England defender Harry Maguire their top target.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are trying to cling on to key players Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, both of whom are targets for Real Madrid.
